Sound Event Suggestions & Instructions

Below are just a few of the Events you can assign sounds to, and some AR .wav suggestions to make your computer come "alive" and talk to you. :-) There will be more choices when I get more .wavs into the Sound Gallery, but you get the idea. If you don't already know how to change the sounds on your computer, I have provided Instructions on how to do this manually for several different operating systems, or you may choose one of the handy utilities that will do it for you, a few pages down.

How to Change the Sounds on Your Computer

Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, XP | Windows 3.1 | Macintosh | Utilities

Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME, XP Instructions

After you have downloaded the .wavs you'd like to use, go to the Start button and click on Settings and on the Control Panel. In the Control Panel double click on Sounds (or Sounds and Multimedia). You will have a box on the top with the events you can assign sounds to (Windows Start, Exit, Menu Pop ups, Recycle Bin, Close Program, Maximize, Minimize, etc., etc.) When you click on the item, if there is a sound attached to it there will be a speaker next to it, the name of the sound will be in the box below. To change it click on Browse, go to the folder you saved the sound .wavs in and pick the one you want. You can preview the sound by clicking on the little arrow. When you are satisfied, click OK and then click Apply. Click on the next Event you want to change and repeat the steps until you are done with all the Events you want changed. After you are finished click Apply, then click OK to close the window.

Windows 3.1, etc. Instructions

After you have download the .wavs you'd like, copy them to your Windows directory (C:\Windows). Go into the Control Panel in the Program Manager and select Sound Events, or Desktop, then Sounds. You will see two windows, the one on the left is what you can assign sounds to, like Windows Start. The sound choices you have in your computer will be in the box on the right. Whatever is highlighted is the current setting for that event and sound. So if Windows Start is highlighted on the left and Chimes is highlighted on the right, then the Chimes sound will play when you start your computer. To change it, click on the event on the left, and on the right side, click on the sound you want. You should be able to test it also. If you are assigning more than one event (windows start, exit, default beep, etc) you do not have to click on OK until you are all finished. The computer will remember your changes as you go.

Macintosh Instructions

The Macintosh stores beeps in the System file in the System Folder. The sounds must be in System 7 sound (or .snd) format (the kind with the speaker icon that you can double-click in the Finder and have the Finder play them). So, after you've downloaded the .wavs you'd like, you will need to convert them to System 7 format, and doing that will require you to use a conversion program. I suggest SoundApp. Once you convert the sound file, quit all open applications and drag the sound file onto the System file (not the System Folder). You can change the current alert sound to the new sound using the Monitors & Sound control panel (on older Macs it's the Sound control panel). You can get more detailed directions using AppleGuide or MacOS Help from the help menu in the Finder. You can also change the Startup and Shutdown sound simply by dragging them into the startup items or shutdown items folder in the System Folder (after you've converted and changed the name of the files, of course).

If you have found an error in any of the above operating system instructions, please e-mail me.
